Good afternoon,
My 1973 340 LA engine short block is getting there, but I am a bit concerned about the heads and the cam I pulled out of it before going to the machine shop:

Head casting number 3671587-8 and -9: everywhere I look these heads should've came with 1.88 1.06, but machine shop is finding 2.02 valves in there...can't remember the other dimension...machine shop phone ringing off the wall...sorry
I cleaned up the Cam and on FWD end common to the timing gear, there's cast number "1136" or "1186". on the aft portion common to the distributor gear I found a "63"

Any words of wisdom?

Somewhere along the line the intakes were opened up to 2.02 . 68-70 specs. Higher compression and different cam.
The 1.8 8 are sufficient for a period 340 unless you are changing the pistons, cam, intake etc...

I general if larger valves were installed this helps in every way done properly
The cam numbers mean nothing , is there purple paint between the lobes ?
UI would suggest replacing the cam with a known Good grind , my suggestion would be a Lunati vooDoo grind , we can help you choose .

Man I appreciate your help...thanks.
Yes there's purple paint. Here's the particulars:
A904 3-spd automatic (no modifications (i.e shift kit)
Standard drive shaft
Not too sure what torque convertor, as I got this engine without it.
3:23 Factory sure grip rear end
340 engine: stock pistons / steel crank / factory lifters for now (depending upon cam)
I believe stock 1.5, correct?

I was entertaining a roller cam but a little voice is yelling at me not to.

73 340 would have an 800cfm Thermoquad probably part number 6340S. But any 72 to 74 Thermoquad can be rebuilt and dialed in to work. The bigger intake valves with a good valve seat cut will work well with a bigger Lunati Voodoo cam. I like the "703" cam the best for a mostly stock 340, but they seem to be temporarily unavailable. There this one, but it needs head porting and 10:1 compression to work well. Your stock 340 has the factory pistons (which were low compression), right?
