Sorry to say but I did not find a good solution. I ended up using the grommet that came with the valve covers when I bought the car almost 10 years ago, and buying some Permatex Clear Adhesive Sealant-Silicone RTV 80050 to insure no vacuum leak around the outside of the grommet. I just did so...

Beautiful job, and much easier than trying to apply the material to the door skin itself. I am thinking having the air space between the sound deadening material and the door skin might enhance the sound deadening effect. Much appreciated.
I found this application of sound deadening material interesting. When I did my doors, I applied the material to the outside wall of the door instead of like this. It was a real pain in the ass to apply inside the door but got coverage of most of the sheet metal. Any thoughts about whether...
