all very good suggestions check for vacuum leaks and see if the choke opened all the way when warmed up that controls the high idle when cold which is adjustable i wouldn;t have thought of dist weights but check it out maybe a spring rusted and broke
i just googled that part number and it showed 2 pieces from amazon years ago i made that short one later i bought all new fuel lines from inline tube and i never used the short one I;m in new jersey near philadelpha if you are close come over to look at it
i have done some ut oh;s too so it;s in the oil pan or under timing cover you got to take off the oil pan before the timing cover so i would start with the oil pan unless you can fish it up with a magnet the ones with a flexable head on a long skinny rod
oh yea the easy way to do that is to use a dwell meter google how to do the tests it needs to be pretty steady at idle and blipping the throttle and check dist shaft for play
a lean condition would probably be a vacuum leak bret has a good idea with the dist cam check to make sure all the lobes on the dist cam open up the points the same amount
just looked at my 383 cuda it has a plug there even my chevy 350 has a plug under the fuel pump if you take that out the pin should slid out into your hands to install push pin all the way up i would use a ratchet extension then push in fuel pump before the rod has a chance to come down again
rattle can stuff shouldn't lift lacquer just do light coats it will lift enamel i bought my cuda 40 years ago and when i get behind the wheel i fell like i'm 25 again spring is coming can;t wait
you could clear coat it even with rattle can clear but why ? when they are 100 percent restored everybody doesn;t drive them to afraid of getting a chip in the paint .. drive it like it is and enjoy
the fuel pump push rod ? i didn;t think they could fall to the oil pan they just slide down you can push them up it;s hard because there are smooth and the oil is slippery usually there is a plug below the fuel pump you can take out and push it back up so you can install fuel pump.. i can look...
