1970 383 Challenger Carb

Have a matching numbers 70 Challenger with 383 automatic. Engine trans match vin/tag and build sheet.
Has a Holley on it now. Could that be correct or was it only a Carter?

Could you tell us if it's a N code 383? Is it an R/T? or non R/T? I think the 383 with 335 hp had a carter carb and the base 383 4bbl was a Holley carb. I'm sure 440's were the same, HP had a carter, non HP was a Holley

Is there a tin tag attached with some numbers stamped on it? Does the car have ac? There should be number stamped on the carb itself too R4368 or R4369.

It was the other way around , 1970 383 with 335 HP with auto used Holley carbs. The blue 330 HP engine with an automatic used carter carbs.

Exactly right. Basic rule for 1970 383, orange engine = Holley, blue engine = Carter. With the build sheet you can be 100% sure. What's the number in the 'Carb' box?

I do have the build sheet and found e-bodies.org decoder. What a great tool!

The carb is showing as code 42 and decoded as R4366 Holley and a Holley sits on it now And is an orange engine

The car is a RT / SE. now that finally is starting to warm up in Wisconsin I will look at the cab numbers.

Matt, Holleys don't have tags. The list # is stamped on the choke horn.

Never knew they used Holley 4bll carbs in 1970 on big blocks.
I owned several 1970 BB Challengers over the years and they all had AVS Carters except for the 6pk car.
I thought they started using Holley's in 1971.
The 1971 Challenger N code convertible I had picked up way back had a factory Holley on it. Always something to learn.

Matt is correct; the part number listed above is actually the Holley series numbers;
The carb part number for the 4160 series on a 70 383 would have been R4368 and R4369

It gets confusing because 1970 440-4v ebodies came with Carters. And there are stories of carb fires with the Holleys that resulted in a lot of them being switched over to Carters early on. My own 383 R/T SE had a Carter on it when I got it but it was out of a 69 Super Bee. I think this list (credit goes to '6bblgt') is the best one there is-

Also here's a 1970 Rapid Transit System ad that shows the Holley for the "special high performance" (orange engine) 383 'Cuda (not Barracuda) and Roadrunner. R/T Challengers and Super Bees got the same treatment.

I got curious so I looked at the original broadcast sheet for my first Challenger back in the early 70's Car was an RT 383 n code car with an automatic.
Broadcast sheet for the carb on this car indicated a 42. As per EV2-

Hmmm, my 1st real car was a 69 Roadrunner I bought new, 383 auto with air grabber, engine was orange and had a Carter AVS, Michigan car. So doesn't fit in any of the above.

Ok as per the 70 service manual.
CAS Cleaner air system.
Consists of special air cleaner, breather cap, ventilation valve, carburetor and distributor. There is about a paragraph in the manual that describes this in greater detail.
ECS. Evaporation control system.
Consists of the CAS system PLUS a vented fuel tank, separator fuel tank, vapour tube, breather cap, enclosed bowl vent valve, a vacuum pressure relief fuel tank cap and hoses. and an additional paragraph in the manual as well
