I recently bought a 70 Camaro that has a DANA 60 in it, obviously installed for strength as the car was being built for drag racing but was never completed. I have plans to finish the car, but have a few other projects to button up first.

Anyway, the rear is still in the car, but I crawled under it and got the numbers off the passenger axle tube. They read :12 2 9 A7 and below that its stamped 603080 3.

I looked these numbers up on the internet and it decodes to a 1970 Challenger or 'Cuda, 4.10 ratio, power-lok. Says they came in the HEMI and 440 cars. The rear is complete , drum to drum...but it didn't take the rear end cover off to check if the gears are actually 4.10's, or someone changed them.

What I need to know, is what I should ask for the rear. I don't want to rip myself off and give it away. Can someone give me a ballpark of what to expect???

How much of a decrease should I expect if the gear set isn't original?

Thanks a lot,
George from Pennsylvania

Welcome to the site George. A tough one. Any records for the Dana ? Miles ? Any mods like brakes, axles length, bolt pattern spring perches moved ? There is a long time between the axle codes stamped on the tube, 45 years. Just like selling a 1970 vintage 396 with no info other than the year and original application. To get a true value, requires a tear down and inspection by a reputable driveline shop. Other wise you could sell as is for a lower price. If it isn't broken, $800-1200.

For $1000, I'll probably just leave the Dana in the Camaro. I was somehow under the misconception that it would be worth more, simply from a rarity standpoint. I see things like grilles for these cars go for crazy money, so I thought an original Hemi car dana rear would be a little pricier. A stock 12 bolt will cost me that much, or more.

Thanks for the info moparleo, and the warm welcome.

A Cuda grill will only fit a Cuda, not a Camaro. The crazy money is for original, unmolested parts. Parts modified to fit another application drastically alters the resale value. A part is only original once. By the way George, did you come to the site only to sell some parts or do you have or are you going to get yourself a Mopar ? If so, save the Dana and get a 12 bolt for your Camaro. They made a ton of them. then you can have the Dana for your Mopar.

I agree with Leo. Probably big gears, and modified like crazy in a racecar type transplant. So, for resto purposes....I'm guessing it's been too modified to have a bunch of value.

Yeah, I do have a couple Mopars....unfortunately, no E Bodys anymore. A 68 Dart GTS and a 69 Charger R/T 440. The dart already has a Dana in it, the charger is an 8 3/4.

The Dana in the Camaro isn't molested, maybe I should have made that clear in my original post. It still has the stock spring perches, stock drums, stock axles, stock length, and bolt pattern. I pulled the cover off this afternoon and the guts all appear stock too, still has the 4.10's. The only thing that doesn't look stock is the half rust / half chrome cover. Like I said, I'll just leave it in the Camaro, looks cooler than a 12 bolt anyway.

Thanks guys

If you keeping the Camaro, leave it there. It is better than the 12 bolt.

I agree! While your here, please post up some pics of your mopars.
And you might as well post up pics of that dana.

They can go for 2-3k if in the right condition and right buyer.

Unaltered E body units can bring some tall money but if the car is a keeper I'd leave it there like others have said. If you're a Mopar guy and you end up selling the car, that's when I'd swap it out and sell it seperatly or put it in your own E body.

I'm restoring a Dana out of a 70 e- body. Correct production numbers on axle tube, date coded trac loc and 4.10 ring & pinion. Even has the axle end play adjuster and left handed wheel studs still. Will be for sale this summer.
