340 block for sale on Craigslist

$1200 not including the rods is a bit on the high side. I could get on Craigslist right now and put together the same package for around half that but who knows, the right person might see it and fork it out. This is of course my own opinion...

The add said it's been cleaned maged and miced by a machine shop in MI, paperwork included. I looked into Accu-Pro and they seem like a reputable shop.

So it is a core. I just bought a 73 running 340 with 70,000 miles on it. It was complete carb to oil pan for $800. I heard it run before it was pulled. It is in great condition. Maybe that will help give a comparison for what this motor is worth.

And if it were a 70' you could add 200 to 400 bucks in the same running condition.

At $1,200 for a running 70' 340, this Craigslist motor is only worth $600- $800.

I see your point. Not much on ebay right now for under $1k.
Although, If I purchased a running 340 I won't know what I have internally until it's apart which I would want a fresh built anyway.
Hughes had a '69 date coded 340 I was looking at for $1200, sold last month, block alone. A new race block is $3300. Just trying to get an idea of what to offer before it's gone.

My point exactly. At least we now know Traveler is looking for a 70 340. Does anyone have one ?

I see 340's come up here and there. $1,200 for a block is crazy unless you really gotta have it. You should be able to find one for around $1,000 give or take a few hundred. A friend of mine has two extra 71 340's. One is on Craigs right now for $1,100. It needs gone through. He'll go less. I think you can find a 70 in the same price range.

I think a 70 340 with the cast crank and larger valves is worth a lot more then that. A much better powerplant. My opionion of course.

70 has the forged crank, higher stock compression, and larger valves. Much of which makes no difference when you have to do a total rebuild of a motor. If you have to buy new valves and pistons for your rebuild, you pretty much can build a 70 motor out of any 340.

Yep, none of it makes a bit of difference. A good rebuildable core from any year is equal to every other year with the only differences being casting dates. However The best blocks are the very early ones as I've heard that they have the highest nickel content. If this is true the '67 castings would be the very best ones to use.

I think if it is std bore with no issues it is well worth the $1200 340's in good shape are hard to find I've seen blocks that have sleeves fitted sell for that sort of money what is the point of trying to save a couple of dollars if you end up with an pile of scrap or have to spend the money saved on welding or other repairs?

They're just not that hard to find around here at least.

Even here is in south Florida, where around a third of the population didn't grow up in America and could care less about a 340, they can be found.
