That's not a 70-71 cluster, the clock and speedo do not reset thru the front lens they are remote from the rear in 70-71.
72 and up reset thru the front lens like yours do in your pictures.

It does have the 70-71 8K tach though.

Detmatt .....so someone changed an 8 k tach into a 72 cluster ?......or they used a left over 8 k tach in a 72 cluster maybe ?

I have heard that some early 72 production got the 8k tach, I've not seen one myself but with Chrysler I wouldn't be surprised
and this might be one of those.
Who can say what's happened in the past was the tach changed? maybe, maybe it's original as well.
Also the front wood grain bezel has the seat belt warning light on the right side, 70-71 models did not have that.

The other thing that dates it after 71 is the seat belt opening on right side of the dash for another idiot light.

This one’s not early so it’s way more likely that the tach was swapped. Don’t forget that a very common occurrence is guys tach quits, guy goes to junk yard littered with these cars and buys a replacement. It also could’ve been replaced with a new one from the dealership parts counter.

As we know with Chrysler nothing is in stone. I bought a 72 Challenger with a 318 just for the rally dash that was in it. Unfortunately car was a typical rust bucket so I took dash and wiring and installed it in my 71 Cuda. It has a 8000 RPM tach and I'm pretty sure previous owner did not change it. I bought this car in the late 80's when nothing was being reproduced at the time. It also had A/C and I took some of that off also. Then i called the junk yard to tow it away. It also had the tape recorder, console and bucket seats. Car seemed to be fully loaded, but no room to store any of the parts and back then there was no big demand for the parts like today which is also helped by forums such as this. I bought car for $150.

I once did some armature researching on this issue of the 7 or 8K tachs, I determined that while in general the 8K was a 70/71 deal they were in fact installed in later years which was most likely an inventory issue. No way the factory was going to toss a perfectly good tach just because the 7K tach was the standard, no doubt that the management wanted everything used.

You can see this many times with 69 parts used on 70 cars, etc. One of the things that makes Mopar so much fun... (and drives the purists crazy).
