Hey I’m working on a 1986 a833, I just got this input shaft installed for me due to the previous shaft being bent. I’m installing the front retainer but when all four bolts are in all the way. The input shaft is very difficult to move or even lock up the more I tighten the front retainer. It’s not in gear, it’s in neutral, I even put some grease to see if that would help but it didn’t, Please help

Wrong bearing for shaft or wrong shaft ? mic both shafts? Use a depth gauge check depth of retainer and height of front of transmission. Clean grease of use bluing to see where it is contacting.

It could be a roller brg out of place inside the front input shaft or the syncro ring out of position between the the input shaft & main shaft , something is not right .

reklein: At first glance of the picture you posted,it looked like an army man holding or helping on the shaft. I thought that might be his problem. It's a hammer.

I'm not an expert on the a833. But it seems to me that there is unnoticeable difference in the shaft or retainer for different years. It has to be measured. Someone might fill in the blanks in my mind. I'll have go read on it again.
At a quick glance the retainers and bearings are different. My thoughts are going to what you changed. I hope not. hope it's something simple. 2nd picture about front retainer. If you don't see the problem on the outside .As Chryco Psycho said: a roller bearing out of place 18 instead of 19. or something not seated. You search will be inside

The large external snap ring should easily rest up against the case and the input shaft rotate easily. The bearing retainer should not be forcing the bearing in.
