AAR 3x2 setup question

I purchased an AAR that was missing the original engine. A T/A block is a bit out of my price range. I have the original carbs but no intake.

I was hoping to get a good 340 block and some J or O heads and sit the 6 pack setup on it. Is there anything special that I need to know? Are the ports different?

Thanks in advance.

no differences between 340 heads and AAR heads other than the offset pushrod holes and rocker assemblies on the AAR heads. Ports are the same and you won’t have any issues adding a sixpack

Yea, T/A/AAR heads are just early OEM 915 castings that had the intake pushrod holes for its 2.02" intake valves machined offset .

The offset pushrod allows the ridge that exists top to bottom on the 340 intake port, allowing pushrod to operate, to be removed as it isn’t needed. The factory casting was the same, the machining of the pushrod offset to allow porting is the difference. Offset rocker arms are needed to accomplish the improved airflow potential.

So a regular block and heads will work fine with a 6 pack set up.
But, it will not perform as well as offset heads ?
Is this a major difference or minor difference in performance?

All of the differences with the T/A parts offer more potential for power without actually increasing it .
So unless you do the porting it won't make a difference is what I am hearing.....probably the way I will go since it is not numbers matching and T/A stuff is outrageously priced.

The advantage offered by t/a heads only is available if 5th are ported. If you look at your 340 intake port there is a ridge on the pushrod side that provides clearance for the pushrod. The t/a head moves the pushrod so the ridge can be removed.
