It would be blue with the 2 bbl or 4 bbl and automatic; orange with the 4 bbl and 4 speed.

Went by your first post. It would be orange. I thought you had picked up a SE. I didn't know it was the one from your screen name.

Wait a minute! I just had this conversation with a bunch of buddies and a whole other forum not to mention and I'm about to, that the 383 HP with air and automatic in my '71 vert was and will be again orange. I know for a fact the long block had never been out of the car before this year and there wasn't a spec of blue paint on it.

You have a 71. It may have been different. I haven't researched 71. I have a 70 383 N code 4 speed car. That is why I spent years collecting photos whenever I found an original N code car. There was a huge discussion on Moparts. The overall consensus and photos show the 330 hp 383 blue with auto and orange with 4 speed. It is too bad the N code was not a package like the 340 A66.

I agree with challenger6pak, the 71's may have been different but for 70, a 383 auto non-R/T would be blue the vast majority of the time. Of course there have been a few exceptions found also to complicate things. A blue engine would have a Carter AVS instead of a Holley for a carb. Is there a build sheet for this car?

According to the charts in the links a 383 HP is orange for '70 and '71 and doesn't differentiate for standard or automatic. Galen's book does say the Carter equipped engines with ac were found to be blue but does that mean some ac cars had Holly carbs?

For 1970 the only cars with a/c and a Holley would be the 383 R/Ts or R/T SEs. (And 'Cuda models but not Barracuda if including Plymouths).

Edit- 4-speed N-Code non-R/T cars with air also got a holley.

It's confusing because there are two N code 383's. A 330 horse non RT motor and a 335 horse RT only motor. Matt, most charts consider the 335 horse motor to be the high performance motor.

By '71 it was de tuned to 300 horse probably with or without ac, considered an HP and painted orange wether behind an automatic or manual.
I hope the o.p. is kool with me keeping the conversation alive and advancing it a year but I figure since his question was answered quite well by you great guys I would take advantage of the hot iron.
These intricacies are numerous and very interesting to me when it comes to the Mopar world and one of the reasons I love these cars.

I was referring to the 70. According to Moparts your 71 should be orange.

Matt, I sent this link to a couple of friends that know more about the 71's than I do. I have only been around two 71 verts with 383 4bbl. One was my 71 Barracuda convertible 383 4 speed, and my buddies 383 auto 71 Challenger convertible. Both had orange engines. I still have the Barracuda 383 in my garage with the hope the car will come up somewhere so the motor can be reunited with it.
