I will be shipping this hood to its new owner and figured I would share how I am building the crate to protect it against damage. I mortissed out the 2 X 6 to capture the hood and lock it in place so that the hood is suspended inside and will not move at all. Still have to finish it, but I'll post up the finished product including the weight and how much it will cost to go from Detroit to CT. The hood itself weighs about 65 lbs.

OK, pretty much finished with the crate accept maybe adding a plwood skin on the topside. It finished out at 69" x 55" x 9" and weighs about 150 lbs. It will be shipping Fed Ex Freight and will probably cost around $300 to ship. As far as what I am charging to actually build this crate, labor and materials so far about $40 to $50 in materials and about 3 hours in labor. I am waiting now for the exact quote from Fed Ex.

Been there / done that pretty much the same way but caution! if the shipper does not keep the hood in a horizontal position, like in your pictures. If they point the nose down during shipping, the nose will almost certainly get damaged. Just something to let the shipper know.

Thanks Leo, but the nose of that hood wouldn't sustain any damage if the crate was dropped on that side from a foot off the ground. 25 years as a Carpenter, 10 of them in the auto show industry. A couple of those 10 years I would work in the crate department where crates for shipping things like plasma screens for there life over the road on the show circuit were built.

Looks like it will cost just under $300 to go from Detroit to CT.
