Clock reset Knob

Does anyone know the size and tread count on the stem for the reset knob. This is for the reset knob on the clock in the standard dash cluster.
I know parts are available from different suppliers. The problem is the final price. Cost of item + exchange rate + shipping and duties and broker fees.
That makes it real expensive. Just need the size and tread count ,i can make the knob and sleeve nut myself. Just don't have small enough gauges to measure treads.

Pretty certain it's 8-32 treads. Take a ruler or tape measure with 1/16 s on it and every other thread should line up with the ruler/tape measure.

I need one of those inner stems. I've got a reset knob assembly, where the inner stem rusted badly and failed. I still have the outer components. So if you can fabricate the inner stem, I'd be interested in buying one.

I have a complete operational OEM reset knob stem assembly. If the sketch in post #4 doesn't afford you the data you seek, I can go dig mine out and take some measurements for you.

I bought the last of Elan71's knobs, for a restoration project. He then made another batch with a lower price. I was disappointed. But his assembly (dimensionally) worked perfectly for a client. My only complaint was his assembly was nickel plated, so it didn't match the black iron-oxide finish as the OEM.

I was thinking it was a 4-40 but that is way too big. I took the knob off of one I have and compared it to the smallest tap I have. Not even close. I have no Idea but the 1-72 would be much closer. Guess you are stuck with quizing someone that rebuilds them.

OK, first thing we need to be sure of, this is for a rallye gauge clock, correct? Let me know and I'll go to the barn tomorrow and check with mine I have in storage. If the standard gauge cluster, that's the 90 degree one and I can check that too. If EW1BH27's drawing is correct, it's a like a 2-56!

He mentioned the standard dash that takes the clock I showed in post 6.

I'll try to measure mine tomorrow if I can find that part as it's not attached to the gauge cluster. But it might be the 2-56 like I said.

OK, I search for two days and can't find the clock knob! Sigh! I was able to get a number 41 drill bit through the hole in the part attached to the clock. A number 40 drill bit was a no go. A number 41 bit is .096" and a number 40 is .098". So I would think it was a 4-40 UNC, but Sixpactogo says a 4-40 is too big, so now I'm stumped.

Measuring the threaded end of Elan71's stem assembly (pictured) measures out to #1-80. Check my math, make sure I didn't screw it up:

I count 5 threads, peak-to-peak across 1/16 (0.0625) inches, making it 80 TPI. Google suggests 80 was used on #0-80, but that would be a 1/16 (0.0625) outer (peaks of threads, not valley) diameter. Elan71's stem (made from brass) measures 0.073 making it a #1 screw.

If you need any other dims, let me know. I do NOT have an OEM knob assembly I can measure. I've got parts of one that has rusted, but I need another stem and threaded nut to make it complete.

I'm pleased with Elan71's work. For anyone seeking a stem assembly, it's a pretty darn good reproduction. I only wish the outer stem was in the OEM iron-oxide finish.

Christmas came early. I found a complete OEM knob with a clock belonging to a client. I'll take some measurements...

edit: the threaded end of the OEM shaft is smaller in diameter, and counts out to 80 TPI. The diameter matches the drawing in post #4, 0.068.

Also, the OEM stem appears to be made of aluminum. It's a dull grey metal that doesn't feel as dense as Elan71s brass or how steel should feel.

But get this, it doesn't matter what the OEM threaded dimensions are, if you're fabricating both the shaft and the nut. You simply fabricate them to match, like Elan71 did. It's possible Elan71's tap and die are metric, him living in Switzerland.

Thanks Pschlosser! I was thinking about this more last night and realized I was looking at the shaft backwards! If making your own knob and shaft, you can make it whatever size you want! I think I'd go with at least a 4-40 thread!
