Couldn't find out much about the correct master cylinder for a 71 barracuda gran coupe 318. What came off was a 3461189. Had it rebuilt, but is leaking inside down on floor pan. Really don't want to have it rebuilt again, if it isn't correct to the car. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks GCJohn

Looks like that casting number is correct for a '71-'72 B, E Body with manual or power drum brakes.

I could be wrong but I think 3461189 is for an A-Body and you need 3461187. See page from E-Body Judging and Reference Guide.

Unfortunately a master cylinder with the 34611187 number casted in it, will most likely be rebuilt and expensive. The supplier was Bendix and their part number is R11515. I know you're doing a nice restoration, so you may have to pay top dollar. 🙁

I put a different image in my previous post. There are two charts in that Brake article, one for drum brake m/c and one for disc brake m/c. Is you car drum or disc?

Your current m/c appears correct for a 71-'72 B or E Body with manual or power drum brakes. Don’t forget to look for casting number vs part number on the chart.

If you want to have it rebuilt, I strongly recommend Brake and Equipment Warehouse in MN.

It does have drum brakes around front and back. If that is the correct master I shall send it to Minnesota

I'd get the one you have remanufactured by the company Floyd mentioned. They should guarantee it doesn't leak.

B&E Warehouse has done work for me and for multiple friends. Top notch service and super knowledgeable. They are very much in tune with restoration and classic cars and are reasonably priced IMO.

Do you all agree that the 3461189 is the correct master cylinder? Or the 3461187, I should search for ?

Hey GCJ, I'm coming in late. The 187 is for power drum brakes. But judging from the mounting studs in your image, I believe you have manual front drum, so your casting #3461 189 is correct for manual drum configuration. An alternate to shop for, just as valid, is casting #3580 006.

If you're going for correct, the restored M/C should be unpainted, not painted silver. Further, painted surfaces don't hold up well to brake fluid, so a painted M/C won't look pretty for long. The top cover is yellow zinc chromate (in color) and the wire bail is galvanized zinc in the customary blue/silver color.

You may want to look at going reman, in the short term. At least, until you find a prettier one, or have your old one restored to fit your budget. Going reman allows you to get on the road, and move ahead on your restoration. The ideal ones carry a tag hanging on the bail with the last digits of the Chrysler part number.

These came on the B-body, too. So when searching by model name, run a search on B-bodies, too.

John, do you know whether you have manual or power drums? Personally if it was me, I'd go with a new master cylinder from RockAuto. That way the brake fluid won't leak. Then go about finding the right part number master cylinder to have rebuilt later.

Yes, I bought a $20 master cylinder a few years back. I got it put on today. I believe that one I have is correct, but not 100% sure. That is why I put that out there, hoping someone knew for sure. I will wait before I put money in the 3461189
