Crush can fitment

Good evening gents,
I'm finishing up the restoration on my steering column and the crush can gap seem a little to wide, not sure the gap before i took it apart. It a auto column out of a 73 challenger.

When I did my column, had to tighten the nut to get the right gap. My opinion gap should be a bit smaller.
