My friend has a 1972 Dodge motorhome. It has a 360 four barrel. It is a duly but it has a Dayna rear end I was wondering if we could take that Dana rear end out and make it fitA Dodge dart or a challenger
Is it a Dana 60? if so measure the length from axle to axle and spring perch locations if these are different to the car you want to fit it to you will need to have the housing modified and maybe new axles made to suit, also check out the brake backing plate bolt hole locations to see if you can fit the brakes you need.
It would be very expensive to modify. As said you would need new axle tubes, new axles and mounts. It would not have a pinion snubber. It will not be a Sure-grip and would need to be rebuilt ( new bearings, races ,seals and more than likely new ring and pinion gears.,) And then a place to do all of this work for you. Just pass. The junk yards are full of 3/4 and 1 ton Dana's. Just not any for a passenger car.
I have built a lot of these
things have changed you can buy a complete dana from Dr Diff in Montana , Or Strange for around 2k depending on options such as Eaton Tru Trac or disc brakes .
Modifing truck diffs works well but more for race cars with narrowed diffs as you can use both tubes , but the time you ccut & replace the housing ends & add 1 new tube for stock E body width or narrow to B body width you will have around $1800 into it & you are reusing the old gears 3.54 , 373 [Ford only] or 4.10 & you may have to add a sure grip or Tru Trac if it is an open diff , if you are lucky it will have the powerlock 4 pinion clutch sure grip in there .
