Good day all,

I am seeking advice on an unplanned event. I have a 74 Challenger. I removed its 318 and A904, and installed a rebuilt 383 and rebuilt A-727. While I was at it(with the engine removed) I replaced the power steering gear, which was very sloppy.

I got a rebuild from Autozone(A1 Cardone I think) and put it and the engine in.

A friend was helping me prime the PS system to get the air out in anticipation of firing the engine. The new rebuilt and unused gear started spewing PS fluid out of the top cover..think it is a bad O ring.

A quick call to the rebuilder said these were not serviceable in the car, and must be removed.

Has anyone Removed and replaced the gear in an E body with a big block in place, and would you offer any suggestions?

Did you have to pull the starter and manifold?

Thank you

Was the steering gear centered or turned in any direction when it was leaking ? The steering gear has a "dead spot" actually lower presuure when centered. Over filling before the air gets worked out also causes the fluid to squirt out. Normal procedure is to center the steering wheel, add fluid to the pump reservoir install cap and slowly work the wheel back and forth to bleed system. Add more fluid as the air works out of the system.
This info is for bleeding air from system only.
Is the leak from the valve body or upper shaft seal?
