Hood insulation

Received my new hood insulation and was wondering, is there any good reason for the hole in the middle? When these were assembled did the insulation retaining clips all go in one direction or we’re they hit and miss.

Don't want a wing nut catching on your insulation when the engine rocks back and forth. Same pad for 2 and 4bbl apps. Carb air filter is not centered the same place on top of the engine.
