Hey Guys,

I have a 2 questions. I'm in the middle of getting ready to paint the engine. It's a 340 and I purchased an LD340 had it powder coated and I went to put it on to mark where I need to paint and it doesn't seem to fit. I'm not sure what's the difference here? I purchased the motor which was running great with the old original intake which is lone gone. That was a couple of years ago. My questions are:

1. Why doesn't it fit or does it? It seems to have some of the ports in the center of the heads exposed which I took a picture of. Does this look right? This is my first 340 so I'm not certain.

2. In two of the pictures there seems to be a small roll pin sticking out of the block not allowing the intake to seat properly. What are they for? I figured maybe locating pins for the old intake.

Anything you got is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dave

Those two ports would be the heat crossover area. Actually, the ports are below those areas and should mesh with your intake crossover runners. The open areas are normal Mopar stuff.
I'm not a SB guy but I'm thinking the roll pin helps contain the gasket and/or the previous intake was located on the block for port match consistency.

Exatly the port around the heat crossover port releases a lot of heat with heat soaking the heads soo it has to be open , the roll pin locates the intake & also stops the cork end seals from pushing out , I usually drill a small hole for the roll pin to slide into the new inatke

You will need to try a different manifold that you know has not had any mods done to it. It is possible that the block has had the deck height changed which would prevent the manifold ports from lining up.

I don't think he is at the point of needing to get a different manifold as he didn't say that the intake ports don't align with the head ports. As Daves69 and Chryco said the open area in the center is normal for the heat crossover runner.

All of the intake ports do line up just fine I already removed the roll pins. I will be using the Right Stuff as the end gaskets. I was used to chevy small blocks where the intake took up all of the head space when the intake was installed. That's why I thought it looked weird. I'm new to Mopars so I'm still learning. I was hoping is was ok since I had the intake powder coated and it turned out so well.

I ran into the same issue. The ports being exposed look funny, but will not create an issue. The pins align the gaskets cork ends and intake. I used silicone in place of the cork per Edelbrock's recommendation, no issues.

Not really a mismatch. They are close and remember there's not any gaskets on there yet either.

Are the ports on on the outer sides of the heads the water ports? Do I put RTV around them when I install the intake? Also what's the best thing to use on the 4 outside header bolts that go into the water jacket? Thanks

I use the silver high temp RTV on gaskets & bolts never had a water or intake leak just don't apply large globs.

Do your self a favor now and install studs on the outer 4 holes. No leaks and it really helps to hold gaskets and headers when replacing exhaust gaskets. You can use any type of nonhardening pipe sealant.

My plan was to use studs for all of the headers since I'm assembling the engine out of the car on the K member and will install it under the car. That way I can install the headers outside of the car. Any thoughts?

Only if you plan on dropping the engine out the bottom if you have to get the exhaust off. The four outer studs are to make servicing simple with the engine installed, not on a stand.
