Used factory 8 3/4" suregrip center section. Early X case equivalent (1964). Factory 4.10 ratio with clutch-type sure-grip. Comes with new pinion seal to install. Appears to have correct backlash, nice ring-gear wear pattern. Axle button is in place. Small yoke. $650 or offer. Located in Pa.

The actual last three numbers on the case (from memory) are 963. There is no X or anything where it normally is. I haven't taken this one apart but historically the early cases were also a smaller straight shaft just like the 741 pinion. My guess is that this was removed from a 4WD truck hence the 4.10 R/P. I don't know of any pass car in 1964 that came with an optional 4.10 gear set.

The early (through 1964) 741/X equivalent is the 1820657 case. The one you've got for sale here--should be a 1634985--is the stronger early 742 equivalent (1.75" pinion shaft, also through '64). I've got one of each, both of which I've disassembled to verify that information myself. It's actually a gem of a center section.

I hope that helps with the sale.

He makes no mention of the 1634985 case whatsoever, though, so there's one glaring omission. Mine is a 2.94 open; it was removed from my friend's '64 Imperial Crown Coupe.
