I'm going through and tramming out all my measurements.

It is my understanding I need to setup points x, located at the gauge hole areas in center of car. This measurement is 6" to datum, which could be the floor if exactly 6".

Then for example point d at rear of frame rail would be 18.25, point a at front rail gauge hole would 14-5/16", and 18 and 9/16" at the center of rear wheel frame rail at bottom side.

Is my idea correct that I have to start with 6" at the x points, then work all my other vertical points to that line?

I'll be adding to this. Use a a tape to check you center section is square.61.33 44.73. Use the top of rocker panels to level the car and across rocker to rocker. Then check the frame for level. A cheap laser level is good for a straight line.

Get one of these now. It will save you a lot of trouble.
Other tapes use the same way all the time. The end slides for the cut.

Here's a blank to write your measurements down on.

I don't care how good you are or you think you are. Measure twice cut once. I built Brides, Highways, Power plants Institutions, pipelines and others. I would be requested for jobs and showed up. There were a few employers I worked for and they argued who I was working for. They ended up both paying me for the same job. Two checks.
Funny thing. A supervisor I worked for a lot.
He would say where not building a church boys.
I was requested to work on flight 93.
He then said well guys we are now building a church!

So the point here is. I cut a 2x4 twice and it was still to short.
See if you can see what I did wrong here.

When reading the instrument. From top to bottom it's 3 1/2". This is the center section. over axle, rear frame rail and rear tail panel.

Front section. The 7" is from the 0 center section. The top of the head was 0 at the center section. 3 1/2 " to the bottom of head. 2nd picture 0 on K frame.
Just so you understand this device is very accurate and only as good as the user.
This give an idea of the measurements to look for with a tape, string and levels.

On the wrong side of the 102 mark. Easy thing to happen.
