Can any of you Mopar guys tell me how can I can get the original options if I only have the vin and the car and the title? I bought a garage fire 71 challenger and the fender tag is gone as well as anything else that's not metal from the dash back. I thought I may have heard that someone is repopping the fender tag but where do the get the info to stamp if the original is gone?

If the build sheet was not destroyed and its still intact, more or less, as far as I know that's the only way and its required to get the tag remade.

Yea its toast if it were there. Only thing I can tell for sure is its blue 383 4bbl 4 speed pistol grip man brake ac delete. Vin decode shows special pricing. New to me, my other ebody was born 318 2bbl ac auto no special pricing there. I'm gonna try and research prior owners see if they may have the tag if that's even possible.

If it's a JS23N1, it's without doubt a 383 R/T. That's about all you can glean from the VIN, along with the build plant. I'm guessing that you're saying no AC (there's no such thing as "AC delete"--it wasn't standard equipment) due to the firewall, which makes sense, but without a fender tag it's entirely possible it's not even a factory manual-transmission car, never mind a 4-speed. Cutting the floor and adding the tunnel extension isn't too difficult, and putting a 4-speed where a 3-speed once sat is an afternoon job. Of course, if there's a 4-speed in it stamped with a matching partial VIN, well, that's another matter entirely.

The world is kind of your oyster here. It's an R/T and it's set up for a manual transmission. Not having the data tag gives you the option of building it as you see fit, and nobody can tell you you're wrong... because they don't know what's right.

If information exists regarding which VIN was built with which equipment, either nobody's found, or dared wade into, that data yet. Apparently it did exist at one time, but what became of it nobody's quite certain.

It is a JS23N1 and I will be going knee deep into eng and trans #s over the weekend. Where exactly are the partial #s on transmission is it easily viewable from the bottom with the car jacked up?

There's a large raised pad on the passenger's side of the transmission. It's viewable from underneath. A ScotchBrite pad and some brake cleaner are your friends to get it cleaned. The highlighted rectangle at far right is part of the pad on my Valiant's A833:

Obviously that's an A-body transmission but the main cases are the same. The pad is always in that location.

The pad will have "PP833" and some other smaller-font codes stamped on it, and in larger digits should be the last 8 digits of your dashboard VIN--the year, the plant, and the sequence number. Using one of my old Chargers as an example, the stamping read "3A201395": 1973, Lynch Road plant, sequence #201395 (lowest number possible is 100001). The ID pad did not exist prior to '68, so if there's notihng there the transmission's been replaced. The same goes if the PP833 codes are there but there's no partial VIN--that's the hallmark of a service-replacement transmission.

The stamped number should be the same on the engine, located below the distributor.

The vin on the engine is on the block below the passenger side engine mount just above the oil pan rail.
the pad below the distributor is only stamped with the year, displacement and assembly date. In this case it should be G 383 and there should be an HP stamped on it too.

Thanks, DetMatt. I just did a quick online search trying to be helpful; I've never actually tried to check numbers on a B engine... the only low-deck musclecar I ever had was a '70 Super Bee and I wasn't too concerned about a numbers-matching parts car.
