It was +/- 5% of that figure. And to get even the 375 horsepower on a used or worn engine, presuming all OEM parts are in place, things have to be perfect, fuel quality, carburetor, fuel mixture, exhaust, etc.
Nicks Garage (Youtube) has done some tests, too. I think that's where I've seen that bit about "being perfect."
Some nice things about the 440, is it's not too hard to squeeze more HP and Torque out of it, and there is a wide base of experience and knowledge still out there to be harvested using google search.
In 1970, the only difference between the 440-4 HP and the 440-6 was the carburetors, which netted another 15 HP.
