1970 Challenger trans question

I went to look at a 1970 Challenger with a rebuilt 727 trans. When the guy started the car and backed it up there was a large puddle of trans fluid on the floor he said that when the car sits the converter drains out over flow the trans and the fluid runs on the floor. I have been around other cars with that trans and i dont remember those leaking like that. dose this happen to a rebuilt trans? thanks for any help

It can for sure if it has sat for a long time , A larger converter makes the situation worse as there is more fluid to over flow the trans . Smaller race converters hold less fluid .
my friend used to thing the input shaft seal was bad every winter as it would leak there but when regularly driven no leak !

A lot depends on when it was rebuilt as well. Some rebuilders just slap parts in and do not actually replace bushings or check for wear on components. If the rest of the car is in great shape, I would not hesitate to buy it and pull the trans for a thorough going over. Peace of mind is important when we drive our old girls!!

I agree. It doesn't cost that much to rebuild a 727.

After years and many gasket sets different pans ect. I have figured out the long time issue. The Neutral Safety Switch is the culprit! Two cars fixed in the last month and now both completely dry. Around $10 for a new unit.

I had one that did not leak around the threads but thru the body of the switch.

Not normal or right. Converters do drain back but they drain into the pan. The only place the transmission is open to the outside without a seal is the vent and that's on the top of the case. Something else is wrong. If you buy the car be prepared to spend some cas to get it fixed right.
