Saw this on another forum. Just a heads up for Canadians buying vintage cars from the US. The law regarding this should not have been so buried that the average Joe can't find the regulation easily.

Do you home work! Knowledge is power. I believe in fair tariff's both ways. But still a money grab by the Governments. In the back of my mind. If I'm thinking it some politician is thinking it. That there going to implement a Classic car Tax!

Yup. He did some, just not enough. Even so, that regulation shouldn't have been so obscure that it "even took the CBSA over 2 days" (~2:50 mark) to find out why he was charged and several days for the news staff to get that info.

I get that there needs to be certain tariffs in place but the tariff on that car is nothing more than a money grab by the government.
The guy is 77 years old and wants his dream car, let it through without penalty. The man's paid more than his fair share of taxes at that age.

There is something weird about this story that doesn't make sense. If the car is stock or year correct there shouldn't be an issue as long as you have a clear title and original bill of sale. Canada hasn't imposed any of these tariffs on any U.S. vehicles whatsoever. There are restrictions on modified engines similar as to what U.S. has regarding vehicles from Canada or overseas.
Rule of thumb is to pay a Customs Broker and have the vehicle transported professionally.

It is just amazing how many codes there are for anything. Such as the code this buyer ran into. 9966.00.00. The Government has continuous decimal points for expansion. It a over reach a reach around and bend over for your Government. It's a good that We the people run are Government here. I do my home work when buying anything of great value, cars houses. Then use a credible authority for transfer. But that is not fool proof. One example. A neighbor sold two houses and the buyer used a title company for transfer. Well in that town the sewer lines buy code had to be updated. By law of another three letter agency. DEP. The title company missed it. I told the new owner the tile company has to pay for it since they missed it. $12,000. There so many laws and regulations you would have to spend you life knowing them.

You are 100% correct. I'm semi retired now, but most of my working life was in OEM MFG for a global corporation (not automotive) in the Logistics & Supply Chain area. I had to know Canada, U.S. & Mexico Customs laws/regs like clockwork.
I have brought vehicles up from U.S. for myself and for friends. SM Hewitt Customs Brokerage specialize in vehicles and machinery in case anybody is wondering...
