Part 4: Shifter Linkage
I have been driving this setup for over a year and it has held up well. The AR5 shifter location is in front of the t-bar x-member, so a little far forward to be comfortable. My car came with a console, so I wanted to retain it.
Last October I 3D scanned the floor and console of my car with the intention of designing a linkage in CAD that would effectively bring the shifter back and left, fit under the console, and pop out in the factory automatic shifter location. It would also be compatible with a Hurst pistol grip for maximum authenticity and masculinity.
Working on and off, I was able to design, prototype, and manufacture the assembly. It was all done on a Bridgeport mill except for the snap ring grooves.
The linkage is now installed with the only missing piece being the pistol grip. The current design has a bit too much slop for my liking, so I am going to remake two parts to change the bearing configuration. Otherwise, it effectively relocates the shifter and is compatible with a console. My interior is whole again!
If anyone is interested in this swap and you don't have a console, it would be much easier to fab/buy a setback shift lever from the stock AR5 location. I have seen people selling adapters for the common lever bolt patterns. If you have a console like me, this is a good solution.
