Does anyone know how to properly get the “black wrinkle” finish on hemi valve covers? Special paint?
I have a set that I got a few years ago for my build, stripped them to restore and then ended up finding a NOS pair from Mopar Performance that were bolt on ready. I am going to finish cleaning these up and paint them.

I've had success with this. It takes awhile to "crinkle". Not sure if it's good enough for Hemi quality, but it's not too expensive.

(Side note):
It's funny, if my memory is correct, the crinkle paint was actually do to lack of proper metal paint prior to painting, but the factory guys decided it looked cool and kept doing it.

You used to get "wrinkle" specific paint in the past. You had to bake it in the oven.

I painted mine with the VHT and baked them under some heat lamps that we have here at work. They came out perfect. These were a polished pair of rocker covers that I media blasted in a cabinet.

Possibly down the road a bit. My son has a 70 challenger and has a line on a 69 426 that if it would work out, we would need them to “70ize” the engine.

OK, thanks. I have a 68 block in my 70 so that's exactly what i'm trying to do as well.

I had mine powder coated, Come out perfect and tougher than paint. I don't have any pics but will post some later

duplicolor makes a wrinkle paint.


Here is a mention from Marty over on ebodies.org.
Prepped and primed the HEMI valve covers with epoxy primer. I applied three heavy coats of VHT Wrinkle Finish paint. Each application was applied in a different direction. Horizontal, vertical and diagonal with a five-minute flash. After a few hours or so the wrinkle finish appeared. The finish developed a nice even pattern and after a few days of curing the wrinkles tightened. Assembled to the engine.

The rattle-can wrinkle paint will last a long time, if you don't drive the car. Expect to pay nearly $1000 to have a body shop paint them with the "correct" wrinkle paint because it's a pricey paint. Like $300/quart or more.

I think I will try the VHT high temp paint. I have to attach the wire holder tabs first…
