I want to replace my old gas cap that is not OEM. Some one took my original gas cap while the car was in a parking lot back in the early 1980's. The car had rust repair and repaint in 1992. When I get the new gas cap, how can I get paint to match the car? Any ideas?

Well, you either have to tint the paint, or you have to blend (the color and clear) the adjacent panel.

Do you know who painted it ? What type of paint was used ? Brand, type, lacquer, enamel, base and clear coat, etc... Any top quality paint mfg. has the technology to match color. You will need a sample, best taken from a door jamb or similar area protcted from uv sunlight. Depending on the color and paint type and exposure, some colors change quite a bit like yellows that turn to a cream color. Some are more forgiving. As AlleyoopMgv says, you may end up having to shoot and blend the area around the cap to get a close match. I would check with the areas top rated paint and body shop and have them show you the options and samples of their work.

Thanks for the paint info. I will call the guy who painted it and a few closer to home.

Shifting gears here. Do you know if a Dart or Duster gas cap will fit my Challenger. I just need something to use until I get this one painted. I have seen Chrome ones for the Darts and Dusters but not Challengers. Any ideas?

Do you know why the '71 is a one year only?
Using the gas cap I bought in 1981. It's an after market lock cap that's not wanting to spring back. I would like to replace this cap with something original. After doing more reading, I'm wondering if I shouldn't use the chrome fuel cap with a lock cap underneath. Your thoughts?

Year one lists a new, primered replacement cap for $29.99. The split on the production date is 5/71, 70 to early 5/71 is one cap part # FC773. Late 71 after 5/71 is another cap, #FC774. The Flip-top cap (a cover really) is the same for all years.(only correct on 70-71)#FR63 $129.99 cap, #HC1010 $14.99 s/s trim ring.

Get the Flip-Top cap it will look much better and you won't have to worry about any paint matching.

I took the car to a cruise-in last night. Flip-Top looks better. After looking and talking to other owners about 'Cuda & Challenger gas caps I have concluded that Flip-Top is the way to go. The next time the lock-in gas cap needs replaced it's a much easier replacement. Plus, I don't have to worry about some one taking my gas cap again. Does Year One use the medal Flip-Caps? One of the guys told me to watch as some companies sell a cheap/plastic flip cap. I take it Year One has the real thing?

Thanks so much for your help.

[/QUOTE]Beware !!! The flip-top is only a cover for the actual gas cap. It is also not secure !! It is held on by 4 exposed phillips head screws and can removed in a minute !!! And it is actually the original Taiwan made cap that everyone sells. "Year-One" is cast into the bottom of the cap and the other sellers just grind away the name. It is very good quality.
