Not even close. This is a 1950's mfg. Hard to make out details but I do see a generator( not an alternator ) from early 60's to 50's. This is the first generation Hemi also called the " Whale " motor. These were mfd by Chrysler Corp. from 1951-1958. called "Firepower" in 331c.i. & 354 c.i. & 392 c.i. Dodge brand known as the "Red Ram " hemi and the Desoto brand, " Firedome . The valve covers came stamped in large letters with the brand name. "These engines had forged steel cranks, were hand built and dyno'd at the factory. Very expensive to mfg. Complicated valvetrain, Finally axed due to high production cost. Very easy to identify by the distributor location, in the rear like the LA motors. The 1964 to 1971 factory installed Hemi's had the ditsributor in the front for more precision ignition timing due to less flexing of the camshaft/distributor location. This engine was based on the RB engine, to cut production costs. It was a compromised engine where the early Hemi was based on aircraft fighter plane engines. Only available in 426 C.I. Known as the "Elephant " motor or 2nd generation Hemi. The current Hemi has no parts in common with any of the older generation engines and is available in 5.7 liters,3rd gen and 6.1 liters in the generation 4 motor. The picture shows what looks like a 2 speed transmission with the early emergency brake type drum at the tail end of the trans. These had the push button dash controls with a lever to apply the brake. Very hard to find parts for. Pass on this one.

Might be a 354 or 392 Hemi from the 50's, (distributor is located at the rear of engine, while the 426 has the distributor in the front). So, no, it' s not a 426. Sorry.

It looks like the motor I had in my 57 Desoto. It had chrome valve covers also.

Like you've been told, this isn't a 426. It's first generation from the '50s.

Depending on what it is, a Dodge, Chrysler, or Desoto Hemi, though, places like Hot Heads and PAW have parts for 'em. Each manufacturer had it's own series of engines before the 350 was introduced as a "corporate engine."

As a matter of fact PAW was the place to buy parts back in the '80s, for all makes and models before Summit and Jegs came along. Now, they do just the 1G Hemi engines.

The downside to 'em, their heavy. With horsepower capabilities about the same as an LA, which comes in lighter. And parts ain't cheap. But cool! Definitely makes one helluva conversation piece. We have a 392 sitting on a stand here that always get attention.

The biggest thing about the early Hemis was the wide range of uses. Industrial engines, marine engines, truck engines, as well as passenger car. With the trans hooked to it, it's clear from the pics the Hemi you're looking at is a pass car engine. But if you find one sitting on the floor, or just laying around, do a lot of research on it before you buy it. Industrial engines and truck engines sometimes got less desirable heads (for flow) or odd cooling systems that make it a bear to put into a car.

Hemi ?

If you can get it for a good price Street rodders love these things .I put one in a T bucket. Garlits was buying up all of these to use in rebuilt dragsters. Check out Hot heads site for parts and there swap meet section and you can see what they go for
Good Luck and happy New Year Skip
