Hello, I talked My friend into Keeping His 70 Gran Coupe. But He had a Major fun time getting the K&N Oil filter off. It takes a 1 inch 6 Point Socket to get the Filter off with the 1inch hex head bolt on the front of the Filter. But the filter felt like it was glued on. The Socket could not Budge the filter. He tried a strap wrench, and an Oil filter wrench. But the worst problem was there is hardly any room to move a filter wrench due to transmission lines, Pulleys and the lower radiator hose. I tried to help, but there was no room for My hands. My wife told Me to try an old stocking and put it around the filter. I did that and I was able to fight and get the Oil filter wrench behind the lower radiator hose. I had about 3 inches of Space to sinch up the Oil Filter wrench and go counterclockwise. I felt like I was going to snap my wrist. Finally, I broke the torque. But I could hardly move because the lack of Room. It was a slow process, but I finally got it off! I told him to get a Wix 51515 Oil Filter. It has knurls on the front of it, so an Oil Filter removal tool will grasp the knurls and make things much simpler with a ratchet. By The way, This Motor was just rebuilt and the Engine Builder installed the K & N Filter while the Engine was out of the car.

He probably used a 1" box wrench, which is very long, and just muscled it on. He didn't want any leaks.

they get hot and seal themselves, I don't tighten them as much as I used too, just a snug and about a quarter inch turn, I've destroyed them over the years trying to get them off. bought a filter wrench that looks like a pair of channel locks that compresses as you squeeze it, got it at harbor freight. those work if you can get them in place with enough room to move it

I aways lube the rubber then it's just a quick hand job. Spin till it stops. Then one last hard hand crank gets it done! I never use a tool. Only to undo what someone else has done. Never had a problem. The only problem I seem is some one else's. Bought a car one time and the seller said it had an oil leak. Took two quarts to get it home 50 miles. Some one changer the oil and filter and the seal stuck to the motor. Changed filter and never had a problem. This happened to me one time too. Grabbed the stuff to change the oil. Just reached under and change oil and filter. Didn't look. Well the seal stuck to the motor and had an immediate oil leak. I have always gone hand tight for 50 plus years. Why does some of this not sound right!

I also Always Lube the rubber and put the filter on as You do. However, My Friend just received the car with the rebuilt Motor and He could not get the K & N Filter off. That so called bolt welded to the front of the Oil Filter is a joke. The 6 Point 1 inch Socket would not budge that Oil Filter. The Oil filter was installed at the Engine shop so tightly and it took Me an Act of Congress and almost snapping off My Wrist to get that Filter off, Lol!

Glad you finally got it off. Some people think "the tighter the better". Had a similar situation years ago with a Ford van. Used a big screwdriver to punch thru the housing and twist it off. Did not budge so pulled all the pieces of the housing off until I got access to the base. Used a smaller screwdriver and hammer against the ridges on the base to get it off. Ugh.
