Painting underneath 1970 challenger

Hi folks the bottom of the floors on a challenger was it body colour or black ?? I have a 68 Satellite the underneath is black sound attenuation .. thanks guys..

Neither actually, car was dipped in grey primer up to about the door handles. All the paint the underside received was overspray from painting the sides, rockers, etc. Some did receive optional undercoating, probably the black stuff you are seeing under your Satellite. Some restorers go to great lengths to "recreate" the primer drips and body colored overspray. To each his own. jess

Correct me if my cloudy mind is thinking wrong. there are some cars that got a small area black out treatment on the rocker panel area.I have to look for it to say for sure.

jt's got it - grey primer with color overspray
Not sure about rocker - but there is sound deadener / undercoat in the wheel wells
Google "Come Back Cuda" - they show some detail on this in their refinish articles

I did mine with grey epoxy primer & oversprayed the purple to look like factory but obviously the epoxy primer will hold up better .

Here are some pics of what the E-Bodies looked like for the floor pans.

The left photo is a 1970 Gran Coupe and the right is an AAR. Pinchwelds are blacked out. Look at the engineering drawings carefully. Certain darker colors did not receive this blackout. F-series refers to 1970 models and G-series refers to 1971 models just like other body and paint codes.

The burnt orange AAR i am doing the rocker pinch weld and the bottom of the rocker was black. Black overspray was blown over onto the floor pan also .

I painted my whole underside and wheel wells gloss chassis black. It is a nice contrast to all the B5 blue suspension parts. Nothing on my car is stock original anyway.

so sad crysler couldn’t see it to paint the underside and inside of these cars ! primer is not the answer , we all know that ! but so cheap they cut corners .. i’m amazed…..my current build will get all the goodies!

I do have the numbers matching woodgrain steering wheel now removable adapted to fit my tubular steering column along with the numbers matching seat belt buckle reused for my window net...

Yes, mine is an LA car, and was a low gloss black in spots where I could see it before I painted every in gloss black.
