Did a 70 Barracuda have a shoulder belt? I just bought a 70 Barracuda and noticed it only has a lap belt. I had a 70 Barracuda years ago and I thought it did have a shoulder belt. I felt the headliner along the edge and couldn't find an anchor point for the shoulder belt. Thanks.

Yes, 70 Barracudas came with shoulder belts. The shoulder belt was anchored above and to the rear of each front seat occupant.
It was a completely separate belt from the lap belt.
Each belt was stored in two retainers. Pictured below is the Driver's side shoulder belt.
The belts were very difficult to use and cut across the neck rendering them somewhat useless.

There are alternatives to add much safer shoulder belts. Let me know if you are interested in that especially if yours are missing.

I think it was optional - Code C13. But not owning a hardtop I could be wrong.

As I delved further, it would seem that they were standard on California cars. See Post#10. That link also shows the location of the anchor point.

C13 is a convertible only option which required a much more elaborate shoulder belt anchor point. See last engineering diagram below.

Federal Law mandated shoulder belts in 1968. Source: AAA
  • 1968 All new cars were required to have lap belts and shoulder harnesses for the driver and front passenger, and lap belts in the back seat.
  • The 1970 Plymouth dealership brochure shows the shoulders belts under the Standard Safety Features:

I found the belts tucked away in the trunk. I'm looking for the anchor points, near the roof line. Thanks

The shoulder belt anchor point is in the green circle. Same type of shoulder bolt as the rear seat lap belts.

The threaded hole is there on all E-Bodies. Work off of the window "angle" in the roofline and feel for it. It will be above the interior trim.

The Barracuda/Cuda roofline has an angle as pictured below. The Challenger is more curved. 2nd photo is the driver's side shoulder belt anchor (threaded hole) for a blue Challenger (note the smoother roofline).

Example showing the smoother bodied Cuda with angled window opening versus the Challenger's smoother window opening.
Counter-intuitive based on what you would think, right?

Another view of most all of the holes found in the roofline and sail panel area. This one is also a Challenger but very similar to Barracuda.

2 1/2" up from the trim edge. From center of the seat belt bolt, the rear clip is 17" and the front is 26". Feel for the flat mounting areas and you might also feel the holes. Find one location and measure to find the others.

The factory shoulder belts are unusable. They don't retract and you are trapped. I replaced mine with a three point harness. If you put the reel under the carpet in place of the original lap belt reel it looks as if it came from the factory. I used the original shoulder belt mounting point for the upper bolt. I bounced off a metal dash in an accident when I was 24. I wouldn't want that to happen today because I don't bounce as well as I used to.

Originality or safety?
Search for Wesco seat belt threads on this forum for all the details on the aftermarket 3-point seat belts.

I was thinking about switching to the three point belts. I found the mounting holes for the shoulder belts. I need to find the correct bolts. I guess there are the two different length bolts. The longer bolts is 2 inches and I think the other is an 1 1/2 inches.

I just used the bolts that were already there. Since you seem to be missing the shoulder bolts, the correct ones are given in MoparCarGuy's post above: a C11. If you decide to put the reel under the carpet, you have to use one that does not have to be level, or it will not work properly. If you purchase one that has to be level, it has to go above the carpet in order to be able to do so.

Speaking of bolts, has anyone had an issue with the shoulders being too long on the C11 bolts used for the rear seatbelts on the sides? A couple of years after I replaced the front belts I decided to replace the back seatbelts. I had a terrible time getting the rear seat out. Then after I replaced the belts and installed new bolts, I could not get the seat back in. The seat is catching on the bolt heads, and will not let the seat drop into place because the bolt shoulders are too long. The original, and the replacement bolts are C11. They are identical and both cause the problem.

The last time I time I had the seat out myself was around 1993 and I have no memory of it being a problem. I had someone put a stereo system in it about three years ago and I thought maybe he had done something, but once I bought new bolts and it would not go back in I suspect he had the same issue and didn't change anything. It was restored in 1998 and the body guys reinstalled the interior, but everything "appears" to be installed correctly except the seat is resting on the bolt heads.

The pictures below are what I found after finally getting the seat out.

The guy in this attached link does. He's looking for C13's that were switched out for 1971 from the C11's.

Thanks. Those look good, but no one seems to have them. I ordered some C01s and I'm going to try to put some collars on them.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find some. I tried Classic Industries. They show bolts for different makes. That's why I wasn't sure which bolts to bet.

When you are ready to "poke" holes in the headliner, don't use a razor because the slices you put in the headliner could grow over time. I used a soldering iron which will melt the hole which won't allow it to grow. I used the soldering iron on all the holes for my headliner, mirror, sun visors etc..

Excellent suggestion. 👍
