73 Cuda 340 auto car - I always seem to have leaks from the bottom of the transmission. It runs great. First it leaked from the dipstick - bad o ring which I replaced, is fluid supposed to be up that high.
Next the pan is leaking so I ordered the mopar replaceable one and will put on when I get it. While I changed the filter I noticed that the dipstick only stuck down pass the bottom of the trany about 3/8" of an inch and the fill line on the dipstick is up almost 2 inches, so for it to be full it is up into the tube about 1 1/2" - is that right.
The dipstick is 18 1/2 " long to the curved section that covers the tube.
Can this be the wrong dipstick length or maybe the tube is wrong ?
Or am I good with this setup.
I also have a deep trany pan on it and spacer, do I need to adjust the dipstick length ?
Does fluid running or not sit above the gasket line at the trany pan ?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks Ralph

Hi, definitely wrong, the fluid level should not be up into the tube, I think you have the wrong dipstick or tube or both, the dipstick should almost hit the bottom of the pan, maybe a 1/8 inch from bottom. Hope this helps, sounds like it's getting overfilled.

Thanks for the help.

I will look into a new tube and dipstick.

I just changed the pan on my 73 Cuda today and the dipstick was only sticking down past the rail a little ways. Nowhere near the bottom of the pan. I filled it up so it's inconvenient to pull it back out to verify. I can't say if it is right or wrong because the car hasn't driven yet. I'd call a transmission shop that is conversant in these 727's and get their take.

When the engine is not running the fluid level will be a lot higher because the torque converter and pump drain back to the sump that is why you check the level with the engine running so it will be higher then you think when not running. Check the shifter shaft seals (there are 2) I kept thinking I had a sump leak and it was these seals that tricked me.

Proper Way to check trans fluid level on aluminum TorqueFlight trans. Level area for car to sit on. Fluid at operation temp, transmission in the neutral position, level between add 1 pint and full marks. ATF +4 current recommended trans fluid.
