Vin and engine number

Any ones thoughts. Can a vin number stamped on the engine and trans be the same, and be 10 digits off from the dash vin? Could these still be the original engine and trans to the car?

But the last two digits don't match the vin. They are ten digits off example engine and trans 123551, dash vin 123561?

That has all indications of being a factory mistake for the engine and transmission VIN.
They set up for 123551 instead of 123561 and stamped a 5 instead of a 6 at that location.
Please post photos of the Dash VIN and the stamped VINs on the block and transmission so we can check it out.
Heck, post photos of all the VINs...Driver's Door VIN Decal, Fender Tag, Cowl and Radiator Support.

I would hope your Dash VIN, Fender Tag VIN, and the State Title all show the 123561 since the Dash VIN is everything!

Also check the body stampings at the radiator yoke and at the cowl area. Both are on the drivers side.

Hopefully it's not a rare high dollar car, because technically it's not "numbers matching". Check casting dates on the block, the day finished on both block and transmission. Also, "5s" can look like "6s" when stamped.

Factory screw-ups happened from time to time. I once had a '74 Charger that had a WP19 beginning to the VIN plate on the dash instead of WP29. There are no 19 body style codes. All the rest of the numbers of the VIN matched the engine, trans, door (with WP29), core support, etc.

I missed something in my response, your saying the engine and trans numbers match, but differ from the vin, never heard of that before.
I could pose a few ways this happened starting with the engine and drive train came down one line and the chassis another. Potential to misread numbers on the line and mismatch there. Numerous other ways it could be a legitimate non-matching, matching numbers car. Who knows if this could make your car worth a lot more than it otherwise would be, unique attributes increase value!
I do assume all the chassis numbers you have match the title as others here have pointed out.

All the body numbers match the dash vin number. The engine and trans numbers match each other, but the last two numbers are 10 digits off from the dash vin. I do not own the car. It was something I was considering buying.

Factory mis-stamped engine and transmission is the most likely scenario.
Not unheard of.
Is there a broadcast sheet with the car?

So the engine and transmission stampings need to be inspected for originality.
All of the documentation would support the misstamping.

I do believe that this ultimately adds value to the car, pretty unique to have a factory non numbers matching car! Kinda like an old coin being mis-stamped.

I don’t mean to hi jack this thread but will anyway how can the date on my block be the same as scheduled production date on broadcast sheet. I have owned the car since 1976 and the engine had never been worked on. It has since been rebuilt but not decked to preserve the numbers.

I say yes. My 64 Imperial spd was 04 24 and the engine production date was 4 23.

The Scheduled Production Date (SPD) can vary either before or after the actual assembly line build date. Your 383's engine stamping of 9 8 (9/8/1970) for a 1971 Challenger R/T (JS23N1B) is not a problem. Your car was likely actually built several days or more after 9/8/1970 since this is an early build near the beginning of the 1971 model year.
