440 Oil Capacity In my 70 Challenger

You all are probably saying, "Here we go again." The reason I am asking what the oil capacity of the 440 Magnum is because I did not build the car and keep finding surprises here and there. I have in my automatic 1970 Challenger. I changed the oil and filter the other day and put 6 quarts in it. The chrome Taiwan made dipstick showed about a quart over the full mark with 6 quarts. I ordered an OEM oil stick from Mancini and it showed the same. I forgot to look at where the level was before I drained the oil. The owner's manual says the capacity should be 7 quarts with the oil filter. I am afraid to put any more oil in it but also afraid not to put enough in it. I think the oil pan is stock. Sump is about an inch below the front crossmember. The drain is at the rear of the pan (center sump). I have read where some put in the 7 quarts and remarked their oil stick. I know SBF and SBCs but it has been a learning experience with MOPARS.

I would remark the dipstick and run it. You should be fine.

Di you just use a different dipstick or did you change the tube ? The tube & dip[stick need to match as they may not be the same length .
Typically 5 in the pan & 1 in the filter is normal so you should be fine , if you overfill the crank can whip the oil adding air & losing lubrication

What owners manual says 7 qts for a 440?

Out of curiosity I checked the manual for my ‘70. There is a note indicating an additional quart should be added when changing the filter for a total of 7.

Same on '71 but omits "-3-2 bbl." wording.

Sump is about an inch below the front crossmember.

If it helps, this is the 6 quart pan dimensions. Is this what you have?

If yes, IMO, just run 6-1/2 quarts, remark the stick and drive the wheels off it!

I did a deeper dive into this and contacted Mike at 440Source.com . "This is what he said:
To simplify the answer, all of the car dipsticks are marked the same regardless of what pan they are used with, but only the Hemi would have the larger capacity pan (6 qts + 1 in the filter), so it is easy to see why the public would be confused by the published information. If your car came with a 383 or 440, it would have a 4 qt pan on it, for a total of 5 including the capacity of the filter. The oil is going to fill to the same mark on the dipstick in either case."
The owners manual says the same thing, unless you have a 440 with a 3 deuce setup from the factory. The 6 pack cars came with the larger capacity (6 qts + 1) oil pan.

This is a very interesting site. I did not know that factory oil pans came stamped with a large number on the bottom. Mine is a 971, so I looked it up on the 440 website Oil Pans , and it says that mine is a (4 qts +1) oil pan. That makes sense with the owners manual. I don't have the 6 pack setup.

Yep, never have I ever put more than 5 quarts in any of my big blocks.
