Anyone know a good source for 904 with a gearvenders overdrive? I promise I will not hammer this 340 with 10.5 comp and 3.91 gears and blow it up!

I would think the 5 clutch 999 would be the better choice instead of a 904. Better yet would be a 518 (727 with better overdrive). The 518 will bolt right in with a few notches on the housing webbing and a modified cross member. Gear vendors are so long that the driveshaft angels need to be seriously measured and corrected.

I too was thinking 518 swap. If he keeps the 3.91s, he can go non-locking TC for a simpler conversion.

A500/42rh/42re swap is always a very very feasible swap as well. Then he gets his low gear set 904 with overdrive for Pennies on the dollar compared to a gear vendor.

Where is a good source for a 518? How does the slap-stick work with the overdrive of a 518? Can you purchase the mod'd cross member or do you fabricate it from the stock one? Sounds like a better option, so I'll look into it - thanks!

Online, I found Certified Transmissions - Idaho Transmission Warehouse in Boise that seems to have them. I'll check them out as they are right down the street.

Yes, Juan, the transmission change to one with overdrive is a really nice upgrade and not too difficult. But you may want to do some research so you know what to expect. A wrecking yard is your least cost option for getting the transmission. Some use the money they save to have it rebuilt by a shop. Overdrive is only for the highway/freeway to save gas. One usually installs a switch to manually disengage the overdrive. But there are mods to do this automatically by adding some pressure sensors to the side of the tranny.

I made this bracket to use with the center console stock shifter and the 518. It locates off the two bottom overdrive tailshaft bolts.
