This is not a “For Sale” post. It’s more of a “Found” post.

I picked up a pretty big haul of parts recently, including this 1970 HP2 440, and was told it came out of a Charger. I thought it was a good score, since we don’t stumble upon these HP engines any more like we used to.

After doing some research on the Hamtramck Historical website, I learned the B code on the lower engine stamp confirms this engine was built at Hamtramck, and the only cars that would've gotten an HP engine in 1970 could’ve been an E Body.

The Chargers & Coronets production was moved in 1970 to St. Louis from what I read. With that, only a Barracuda or a Challenger (excluding the T/A) would’ve been the lucky recipient of this HP engine.

I don’t have any solid plans on keeping this engine, but before I decide what to do, I would like to find the owner of the original car, to give them the 1st opportunity to make an offer on this engine so their E Body is a number’s matching ride again to surely increase its value and desirability among purists.

I just joined this site today. Don’t blow up my PM inbox with questions, since it allows for only 15 messages.

I’ll get these questions out of the way now:

  • Yes, the engine spins freely when using a 1 ¼ socket
  • No, I haven’t got any information on milage or rebuild history
  • No, I don’t know what cam, rods, pistons are in the engine (I will take it apart next week)
The 6-pack harmonic balancer will stay with the engine. The Intake/carb, alternator/brackets, M/T valve covers, pulleys, and the 4-speed fly wheel won’t be included with the engine if and when it gets listed for sale, or if the owner with the original car does step up.

If the matching E Body is still out there, I hope its owner finds this post.

My car is a December 6th car so this motor would be in the correct range for my basket.

Hey Josh,
We hung out at Carlisle couple times. and we PM'd recently over on C bodies. (fender tag/build sheet stuff)
The date code on the block sure is close to the one you're hunting.
I actually thought about messaging you about this engine, but ya beat me to it.

It is also possible that instead of “23” that it could have come from a “27” convertible.

Is there a way to confirm if the motor is a 6 barrel or a 4 barrel?
Rods?
Is the balancer different from U to V code?

I haven't dropped the oil pan yet, but there was a complete set of 6 pack rods that were included with all the parts I picked up with this engine.
As for the harmonic balancer, I'm pretty sure all HP engines came with an externally balanced damper, U or V.

BTW, FEBO is probably one of the better-known E Body sites, but besides FacePlant, are there any other E body sites that gets a lot of traffic, where this engine might be seen by the owner with the original car?

Great site. Maybe not quite as much traffic as here but a very mature group of guys that have a ton of information. And the site is not CENSORED like all the for onlies.
Granted, no one really gets political over there. It's all about the car's.
