Need help identifying this on my 73 hood..

Hey all, havent been here in quite some time.

My car is in storage and I went up to look at her the other day and remembered it had an extra place for a hood emblem just before the "340 four barrel" emblem. Anyone seen this or have a clue?

Look on the under side of the hood. How is that piece attached?

Its like a plastic rivet and has a little play in it as you can see by the pic of me pulling it out away from the hood a little. Oh and, where the rivet goes through the hood is factory red, not drilled metal, (as far as I know the hood hasnt been repainted) so it seems like it was put on at the factory?

Is the hood off of an original 1970 440+6 car? Although placement for the third hole looks off. Is this on one of both sides of the hood? Does the hood have the crumple zones in it?

I have talked to the second owner who sold it with 70k on the od. This car has spent its whole life in the area, he told me shes all original. I can say with about 90% certainty that the hood is original. Yes, the rivet is on both sides in the exact same location just before the 340-4b emblem. My uncle had a 440-6p Chally and his 6 pack emblem wasnt even close to where these rivets are and if I remember correctly, it was mounted in the same fashion as a stock emblem with casting through and speed nuts?

I would like to keep this on top until someone can help me or point me to a source that can. I wrote Galyen Goviea? a few years back and he said he knew nothing and that I had to pay a fee before he could do any research. Help!

That was Galen Govier. "Crumple zones" mean the structure on the under side of the hood has "wrinkles" in various points designed to bend or fold at those points when in a collision. The 1970 hoods did not have this and the hood would become a " guillotine " to either of the occupants in the front seats in a front end collision.

Hum, I cant recal if there were ripples or not. I will go look at it today. Could anyone post up a pic of one of the crumple zone?

Here are the best two pics I can readily find. Pic 1 has the crumples zones. They are the indented lines that are on the hood frame. You can see it just in front of the golf ball size holes in the frame on either side of the hood. In the second pic you will see that there are no crumple zones. No crumple zones is the 70 hood design.

Thanks for posting those pics. From what I can see my hood looks exactly like the red one. Its almost like this rivet had one small emblem bonded to it, lkke maybe a pentastar, anyone ever seen a pentastar on an E body hood?

Nope, this is a strange one, I would say that somebody added a personalized touch to it back in the day.

Best I can tell my hood looks like the red on with crumple zones? Like i said, its very strange that it seems to have factory paint in the hole before the rivet was pushed through. Guess I'll find some more avenues to search around.

Yes that is a crumple-zone hood and could very well have been repainted at some point, 40 years is a long time!

Im the 3rd owner. Ive talked to the second owner and he didnt know what it was but it was there when he bought it with 39k. Im going to have to find this out or die trying.

When I put the pic of your hood up on a 60" screen it looks like I see gray primer and overspray. I think the hood has been repainted.

Im not a body or paint guy so Im not sure if theres primer but Im pretty sure the overspray your seeing is when I was like 18 (43 now, yes Ive owned it that long) I took a can of rattle can red to the engine compartment to dress it up. I vaguely remember not having and not being able to afford enough to paint the whole underside of the hood.

Congrats on owning the car that long, that's pretty kool!
I will never claim to be a know it all about these old Mopars. I learn too much new info almost by the day but I would be 100% confident that those extra holes were drilled after it left the dealer.
