Hey guys.. I'm wanting to repaint the red, inner part of this emblem. Its only been on the car a couple of years, but the red paint has faded badly and I want to repaint it. I was wondering if anyone had a particular paint they could recommend for this? Something that would hold up better than whatever was used on the emblem to begin with. I bought this emblem from Year One and the car has hardly been out in the sun or the weather to cause it to fade, but I'm assuming its just a cheap emblem from China or somewhere.
Thanks in advance!

I'm gonna bet that's originally in the factory FE5 Rallye Red/Bright Red color. rallye and shaker hood emblems seem to be that color. bottles of touch up paint in that color can be still be had. were I to do it, I would use stripper to remove the faded paint, first. but the black may get hit by the stripper, so I would have to be prepared to repaint the matte black, too. if you are on a budget, nail polish in a similar shade should work great. after stripping it, degrease it well with acetone, and you should be solid. use a proper tiny brush. take your time and listen to some jazz while doing it.

edit: if you're unhappy with it, you can strip it and try again.

Thanks pschlosser... Actually, I installed new hood emblems a couple of years ago also, and those haven't faded, so there's a mismatch. This thing is definitely light orange now, not red, the way it used to be. I don't know why it bothers me so much, I just know how stunning that emblem looked when it was new! I'm thinking I don't trust myself at all to strip the paint off it first, and would likely damage the surrounding paint, so not sure on that one. I just want it to be bright red again. I was thinking about nail polish myself, so that's probably a good idea.

you can always over paint it, for now. that should buy you a few more years.

Stripper won't likely (test on backside if you go that way) hurt the chrome finish. I've hand painted many things using my desk magnifier and listening to music. some of those were hood emblems and they came out great.

take your time and enjoy the task.

Red nail polish will fade. I tried using an ex girl friends nail polish before and it eventually faded to a more of a pinkish color. Just have a small quart mixed up with some uv protector in it and you will be fine.

I redid some about ten years ago stripped all the paint shot it black took a rag and wiped the top off to expose the chrome. ended up mixing red and orange together with multiple tries finding the right color, 68 rt, and layed the emblem flat and dripped the paint into it until it flowed across and covered the bottom. and then clear coated it. Came out pretty nice looked new.
