The 70 'Cuda in the following pictures were taken in 1981. It was a 440, 4-speed with a Dana 60 rear axle. The 440 had a tunnel ram with two 660cfm Holleys, Hooker headers, a Crane cam, and a Mallory dual point distributor. The 4-speed was shifted with a Mr. Gasket VertiGate shifter. The Dana 60 had 4.56:1 gears. A fiberglass scoop was bonded to a flat steel hood and it had Cragar S/S wheels.
It was my friend's daily driver. Because he had a long drive a few times per week for his job, he wanted to tame the rear gears. So, he offered to trade me the Dana 60 for an 8-3/4" rear axle with highway gears. I told him that was not an even swap, but he didn't care. I had an 8-3/4" axle with 2.76:1 open gearing and 10" drums recently pulled from a 318 Challenger, so I helped him swap it out along with the matching drive shaft. He gave me the Dana 60 with 11" drums and matching driveshaft even for that 8-3/4 axle and the assistance.
We swapped it at his house, about five miles from mine. He and his brother came to my house to pick up the axle in his brother's 1966 Coronet. It still had leaf springs, wheels and tires after being pulled from the Challenger, so I said I would tear it down to put the axle in the trunk. He said not to bother. He tied some rope to the front spring hangers, his brother sat in the trunk of the Coronet, held the ropes and they drove away pulling the axle on wheels behind the car. They were a bit crazy... I lost track of them a few years later, but last I heard he was still driving it.
