By cutting the scene out, they tried to under rate the maturity of the audience .
"there used to be acting but now it's four barrel carbs, all the way"
I think it was Robert Mitchum who said that about Bullitt, the movie.

Also, metaphors aside, that kind of hooking-up was frowned upon by the God fearing folks, it was modern, like it is now!... 50 years ago! These folks weren't gonna have their children emulate that kind of behavior ;
Hitch hiking, Drugs, sex with a stranger, what next? a free run of the country?.... "fiery damnations I tell you......" that's what they said and still say.
These folks probably considered the ending as "justice served" and quite appropriate .
Funny thing is that, to a degree, the movie was about the type of people who would have the scene taken out!

on the side note,
It came to me the other day; I think "hot dam" is the modernized version of "fiery damnation"

Let's not forget the other girls in Vanishing Point
Victoria Medlin played "Vera", K's girlfriend. And by the way she was Barry Levinson's daughter (probably why she got the role)

I understand she was the girlfriend of KISS band member Paul Stanley. Sadly. she died in 1978. Ironic that she had "drowned" in the movie!

I can't watch that movie. Other than the car....it's just so cheesy and stupid. If it weren't for Steve McQueen and the chase scene, I couldn't watch Bullitt, either.

I remember her as Paul Newman's girl friend in the movie "The Verdict".

That’s it! I knew I had seen her somewhere. She looked familiar but more specifically I knew I heard that accent somewhere. Even “The Verdict” is an old movie these days.

Really cool scene. I agree they should have left it in the movie. Never knew about before.

She played a hitchhiker that Kowalski comes across and picks her up. They talk, smoke a little pot, stop and spend the night together. She represents Kowalski's eventual death, asking him not to go to California.
Rampling’s character was a metaphorical vision of the Angel of Death. This was cut from the US version but stayed on the British release of the movie.

After years of watching the movie I came across this version with the added scene. And I agree it adds so much to the ending. I too believe she is the grim reaper, the angel of death, Kowalskis last goodbye. And he accepts it. The final scene as he is driving towards the bullldozers smiling is cinematography genius to me. He’s lived his life, he’s content, he’s at peace, and the smile says it all. Love the movie, love the ending. However I do promote life, he’s too young to die, as we all should live a full and happy life, but for a movie, it very very clever in how they end it. It’s a classic I watch regularly. Love it!

A couple of months ago I tagged along with a friend on a trip to visit some of the VP filming locations. He drove his U-code 70 Challenger from WI to NV and back. Fantastic trip. We posted some pics here:

Back in 2013 I too drove the roads of the movie, up from Vegas to Goldfield, Nevada and beyond. My wife had no idea the significance (as much as I tried to explain) of the hotel. It still looked exactly the same and the inside looked so traditional too. I would love love to do the pilgrimage like so many others in an actual Challenger, but that’s on the bucket list for now!
