The problem with Federal pumps is that the only obvious marking on them is the casting number (2537955). The difference between applications (and associated part numbers) was based on an internal setting (at the pressure valve). I’m not sure how they identified the different pumps at the manufacturer or on the assembly line. I’m guessing paint daubs but there are also several small single digit stampings on the pumps I’ve seen.

There’s a 1971 Tech Service Bulletin that speaks to Quick Ratio pumps and it appears that the 71 340s with quick ratio used the same pumps as the C-bodies (Part 3004799). I was able to track down an NOS one for my T/A.

Interesting info on the 71 pump. Isn't 71 a Saginaw?
I thought the reason they switched away from the federal pump was low assist.
I was going to look for a 70 340 pump, but would need to know how to identify.

(A correct aar/ta from a regular 340)

Agree, 70 340 would get a Federal pump with a 3-spoke 7” diameter pulley. 71 340 got same pump with a solid 7” diameter pulley. I believe the BBs got a Saginaw.

Casting number on a Federal pump. Yours has a solid pulley so it might be harder to see.

My interpretation of the pump would be that which has already been said. 7-inch spoked pulley, bolted on shaft. round filler neck, not oval. Any type add on cooler would be a big plus.

My A66 Challenger 340 has the original Federal ps pump with the cooler. 70 340's have the same pump as the TA/ARR. Actual part number 3004800

I asked if ta was different from regular 340, as I have regular 70 340 pumps. Now the question is, WIW?

I wouldn't be the expert on this as other member have mentioned different flow rates and more. So, Yes, probably differences in TA and AAR. But I'm leaning towards something maybe "cosmetically" or looks correct and would try it. Any pictures of what you have?

While not an "expert" on AAR/TA, I read that service bulletin. 71 340 cars with fast ratio steering would get the same pump used on 70 fast ratio cars, i.e. aar.
Says nothing about a special version of pump with fast ratio.
Not all 340 cars got fast ratio, and all the ones that were power steering that I've seen had a Saginaw.
I've only seen Saginaw on C bodies with the 360, in fact have 2 to look at.
The fact that the pump was used on 340,360,383 and 440 in 69, 70,71 doesn't mean they were used on all models and all engines that could fit one. So application chart just covers over all use of pump.
So going back to my other original question of did they make different flow and how to i.d.?
I see incorrect Saginaw selling on Ebay for much. Classic industries has a repop, needing pully and brackets.
I could get pictures, but it's the federal 340 pump.

I’m not an expert on this but one of the guys on Moparts knows a lot about these. He goes by Dragon slayer. He posted some pictures and he was doing some research on the pumps used on the fast ratio boxes. They are Federal pumps only. Federal pumps were regulated internally with a valve. They have different lengths of the valves and springs to accomplish this task. The fast ratio needed more pressure to work properly so it had the valves and springs to accomplish this. The fast ratio TA boxes required the long steering arm. It is the same length as the C body steering arm. If my memory serves me correctly, some C bodies federal pumps had the same part number in the book as the fast ratio TA pumps. Ill have to look again.

My AAR had manual when I bought it in 76. I converted it with a real fast ratio TA box from another AAR but I did not get the pump with it. I’m not sure where I got the brackets but I bought a rebuilt pump from the parts store. The first did not work well so I bought another and it has worked ever since. I have since found the correct pump that I was assured it came off of a 1970 fast ratio TA steering Challenger TA. It has all the correct dated pulley and cooler with correct vendor codes. I also have the correct pump and brackets from an A66 340 car I parted out years ago. It did not have a cooler as it was a 3.23 gear.

I have many other federal pumps that I might be able to take apart and make some sense of the valves and spring combination some day but that is not a project that will happen anytime soon.

As far as I know, there is no stamped part number on the pumps to indicate the pressure or part number to help with any of this.
