I have a 440 that has a ton of oil pressure! I mean like blows up oil filters! Has well over 100 lbs priming the pump with a drill motor, I bought a new melling at Ramchargers and no change, I'm pulling the motor within the week just looking at what could be going on...thanks

bypass jammed up in the pump ?
I have seen HP pumps put out close to 120 PSI when the engine is cold .
What oil are you using?
I installed a pump off a funny car & hit 185 psi before I changed out the bypass spring !

Sounds like he has already changed the entire oil pump assembly at least once, and still has the same issue. Unlikely two pumps would have sticking bypass valves, BUT possible? :icon_scratch:

The likelihood of two pumps with reliefs hanging are pretty remote I'd agree with.
As DetMatt1 asks, are you getting oil to the rockers?
Sounds as though you are "dead heading" the system somehow and the oil pump relief is overwhelmed.
Since you see high pressure reading it's evident you have oil in the main oil gallery. Is oil getting past the cam bearing and up to the head?

Maybe the rockers shafts are on upside down or an oil gallery is blocked.

Thanks guys, yes I changed the complete pump, I am hoping to pull it this weekend and do more investigating... I'll post my find.

Check for correct position of the rocker shafts there's only one way to put them on so that the oil passages line up. Don't pull the engine unless you have to.

I ran into this with my new motor, if you are not getting oil to the rockers, your cam is not clock just right to allow the oil to pass through to get to the rockers. Hope this helps

I purchased the motor and was told it was a fresh rebuild, it does have crane adjustable rockers and a roller cam, alot of compression so being I wanna street drive it I'll need to tone down that. I have a goal of taking a new Dart making it a 2 door and building a twin turbo 340 with a tube chassis, I'll paint them the same..

Strange that two pumps would have it. I always disassemble and install the HP spring in standard pumps. You find a lot of crus and stuck valves that way before you waste time looking for pressure. No need for HV unless there are bigger bearing clearances. Which pump is it? a standard volume or high volume? Did you rotate the entire engine while priming, or just the priming rod?

You should rotate the engine by hand when priming in order to see that you are getting oil up to the valve train on both sides. I keep the valve covers off until I've primed.

You might want to turn it over while it's being primed. Not saying it will fix anything, but it might...

Oil pump relief spring's job is to bleed off excess pressure so really any excess pressure shouldn't be going any farther than it.

If I remember right you will be able to see down to the cam bearing, from the top. if it is aligned you will see the hole in the bearing.
