Electrical problems

Need some tips on how to diagnose this:
On rare occasions, when I'm driving, the amp and voltmeter gauge will shoot up to max and stay there for a preiod of time until it suddenly goes back to normal.
On sunny days, I don't even notice the change until I, by accident, glance over the gauges. Nighttime however, there headlights and dashlight will dim for a split second.
My first thought was that it could be a problem with the regulator, but by knowledge over electrical issues are limited at best. Any input will be helpful.

Hi malkavellian,

just read this Vintage Chrysler electrical repairs and updates and this Vintage Chrysler electrical repairs and updates (part 2) and you know what is going on.

I'm not sure if this really solves your problem, but I will do the modifications too, at least the 7805 on the instrument panel and the wire that "bridges" the bulkhead connector for the voltmeter (if not done already, have to check it).

I have had problems with moisture getting behind the seal on the voltage regulator , & causing the ammeter the go to full charge

If it's one issue and not multiple, which it may be, I would vote: Regulator.
