I noticed my ignition key was not smoothly going in and out of the ignition, so I applied some graphite and it seemed to solve the issue. A few days ago, I drove the car and when I went to shut it off, the key would not return to the release position. The assembly is stuck one position forward- one click short of the acc position.
How can I get this issue resolved?

Worst case you'll have to pull the steering wheel and can to get the cylinder out.

Sorry, I don't know the actual name, so bare with me. :D I couldn't get my key out a few years ago and accidently found that the metal "tube" thats between the steering wheel and the dash had moved. I'm assuming that the "tube" in my car was made for a column shift. I moved it back, and the key came out.

If yours is a 1970 floor shift model, it may be the linkage that moves the lower collar on the column has too much play in it, resulting in the collar not returning all the way to release the lock cylinder. Maybe a link came loose?

As noted, the shifter/column lock front rod in your floor shift 1970 Challenger may need adjustment:

After the shifter linkage itself is adjusted to match the transmission internal detents, the column lock is set with the shifter in park by rotating the column section inside the car to allow key operation and adjusting the column lock front swivel. For more detail see the Automatic Transmission section about console shift linkage adjustment in the factory service manual.
