My first guess would be some loose wiring that is making contact when it shouldn't. I would check the wires down on the starter first and then follow them and make sure everything is clean and tight. Don't know what starter you are using, but if you are using a mini starter and it has the raised connections it might be making contact with something (exhaust?). Also check that the starter is tight.

If all of the wiring is right/correct then something else is going on perhaps with the switch or the switch wiring. Trace it and make sure everything is good.

Could be ignition switch sticking. Not returning to run position.
